The George Eastman Museum is located in Rochester, New York, on the estate of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film. Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum holds unparalleled collections—encompassing several million objects—in the fields of photography, cinema, and photographic and cinematographic technology, and photographically illustrated books. The institution is also a longtime leader in film preservation and photographic conservation.

The Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts. Its Research Library contains more than one million volumes of books, periodicals, and auction catalogs, and features a Photo Study Collection comprised of approximately two million study photographs of art and architecture from antiquity through the 20th-century.

El Museo de Artes Fotográficas (en inglés, Museum of Photographic Arts o MoPA) es un museo situado en el Parque Balboa de la ciudad de San Diego. Abrió sus puertas en 1983. Con el paso de los años, el MoPA ha aumentado su colección con miles de fotografías que actualmente residen en la colección permanente del museo y recorren toda la historia de la fotografía. All photographs on the NASAcommons Flickr account originate from the compilation of archives at NASA Images. NASA on The Commons will allow the media on NASA Images to reach an even wider audience and invite that audience to help tell the story of these photos by adding tags, or keywords, to the images to identify objects and people. In addition the community can engage in conversation by sharing comments to add information, stories, and thoughts. These valuable contributions will help make the images easier to find online and add insight about NASA.

What is there to see? Quite a lot, although only a tiny fraction of our overall holdings. In our first foray into the Flickr Commons, the NYPL has posted 1,300 items from various areas of its diverse photographic collections.

The Royal Australian Historical Society is a voluntary organisation founded in Sydney, Australia in 1901 with Andrew Houison as founding president. Its goals are to encourage the study of and interest in Australian history.

These are lo-res digital images from the San Diego Air and Space Museum's Library and Archives, which houses over one million aviation related photos, slides and transparencies.

Only a very small percentage of our photographs presently exist in digital form, and many have not been fully researched and described. The photos you see here are a sample of the more than 13 million images in some seven hundred collections in our museums, archives, and research centers. These collections contain photographs collected from outside sources in addition to those taken by Smithsonian staff, and represent a broad range of subjects and themes in the fields of art, history, culture, and science.

The Texas State Archives is the official archives of Texas state government. The collections of the Archives comprise the essential documentary evidence of the history of Texas, spanning three centuries, six national governments, and at least a dozen different languages. Major and unique collections at the Texas Archives include the records of the executive and legislative branches of Texas government dating back to 1836; the records of the judicial branch dating back to 1840; nearly 2500 collections of private manuscripts; a Texana book collection of 35,000 volumes; a prints and photographs collection of 700,000 Texas images; and a Texas map collection with approximately 9,000 historic maps.

The British Library’s collections on Flickr Commons offer access to millions of public domain images, which we encourage you to explore and re-use. The release of these collections into the public domain represent the Library's desire to improve knowledge of and about them, to enable novel and unexpected ways of using them, and to begin working with researchers to explore and interpret large scale digital collections.

The Library Photo Archives collection comprises over 250,000 images in the areas of Anthropology, Botany, Geology, and Zoology. The collection also documents the history and architecture of the Museum, its exhibitions, staff and scientific expeditions.

The Museum's collections include about 3.7 million pictures. The Museum houses both photographic art and photographic culture in its collections. The collections are characterised by the co-existence and interplay of the different types of photography. The Museum also has a collection of photography-related objects such as cameras and darkroom equipments. The images on our Flickr account are marked with “no known copyright restrictions”. When reusing the images, please include an attribution to the photographer and the Finnish Museum of Photography.

The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, the print disabled, and the general public. archive.org/

We've been acquiring photos since the mid-1800s when photography was the hot new technology. Because images represent life and the world so vividly, people have long enjoyed exploring our visual collections. Looking at pictures opens new windows to understanding both the past and the present. Favorite photos are often incorporated in books, TV shows, homework assignments, scholarly articles, family histories, and much more.

We've selected these images to give a flavour of our massive holdings. As well as our 11 million catalogued documents our collection of maps, photographs and artwork is huge and it's also growing as more images are located in files and new material arrives from government departments.

Reykjavík Museum of Photography is the only independent museum of photography in Iceland. The aim of the museum is to shape a unique vision and to be leading in its field.

Only a small sampling of our photographs can be found on Flickr at this time. For the pilot project, we will post a selection of photographs from the Women's Bureau, the Environmental Protection Agency, and a few favorites. The photos you see here are only a sample of the more than 25 million photographs and 20,000 graphic images (posters and some original artwork) held in roughly 2,500 series at the U.S. National Archives in the Washington, D.C., area, our regional archives facilities from coast to coast, and from the twelve Presidential Libraries under U.S. National Archives administration.
